FUNCTIONAL and ATTRACTIVE KITCHEN UPDATE! We removed and updated this 116 year old floor-to-ceiling cabinet for a variety of reasons. Mainly, an upstairs bathroom leak had occurred at some point in the past, which left the old cabinet structure warped and twisted so that the doors would not close properly. Modern oak cabinets were installed (double stacked) to mimic the height of the original cabinet while maintaining the same amount of storage space. The lower cabinets were actually modified uppers that have been built up to a standard height of 34 1/2″ from the floor. We used uppers since they are only 12″ deep and there was limited space due to the island placement in the kitchen. This allowed for a small, high-resolution laminate counter top (possibly a buffet serving line) that did not previously exist. Cabinet doors were a flat panel style, but I customized them to match the bead board style of the other cabinetry in the kitchen. After a coat of primer, two topcoats of paint, and nickel knob installation, these new cabinets are indistinguishable from the old, and they work much better!
