How ’bout some more liveable space! This 8×16 treated deck is a GREAT improvement over (literally, over) the existing 4×14 concrete porch of days past. No need for costly demolition – most decks can be constructed right over the existing structure with little hassle and GREAT results. In this application, I custom built stair stringers with only a 4″ rise (rather than the standard 7″) so that the homeowners could manage the steps with ease. They absolutely loved it! The handrail stands 36″ from the deck surface, and it’s topped off with what I call a “T-style” system. This means I laterally install a standard deck board, which creates a 5.5″ flat surface for drinks, plates, planters, or many other decorative trinkets. This is almost double the surface area of a standard 3″ handrail topper. The homeowners have expressed their excitement with the results, and I’d be happy to give YOU a free estimate on the deck of your dreams!
