DON’T DO THIS! – A homeowner should never allow a company to build a sunroom connecting directly to your home’s eave. This type of construction does not allow for proper roof pitch and will never remain watertight at its connection point. For this project, we were commissioned to remove one of these leaky sunrooms and construct a new four-season room properly. To achieve maximum roof pitch, we used 24′ custom rafters that reached nearly to the peak, creating a satisfactory 2/12 pitch. In addition, a sticky ice guard membrane was then applied, followed up with Owens Corning Duration shingles, to guarantee that this roof will remain watertight for 50 years. All of the sunroom walls are 2×6 construction for extra strength and insulation. Exterior was sheeted, wrapped with Typar, and then finished off with a solid T1-11 wood siding (homeowner hopes to have vinyl siding installed in the near future). For the interior, we built a 6’x8′ pantry closet for additional storage, as well as replacing a kitchen window with a sliding patio door for ease of use. After installing an additional patio door, steel entry door, and 10 windows, all were trimmed out with solid poplar 1×4 boards.
