ALL THE FUN WITH NONE OF THE WORK! I tend to overbuild my construction projects, and this deck is no exception. My goal is to completely eliminate bounce in decks by post spacing, post size, hardware selection, joist spacing, and use of oversized double support beams. In this case, I spaced the joists only 12″ apart (rather than the recommended 16″) for relatively little cost increase and minimal extra time. Likewise, I used 6×6 treated posts rather than 4×4 to allow more space for extra fasteners (Spax lags – highly recommended!). Posts are spaced no more than 6.5′ apart and connected by double 2×10 support beams. Finally, the actual deck structure is built on top of this support system. The decking material is UltraDeck Rustic Low-Maintenance Composite (Cedar), which provides the look of real wood without the upkeep. It is designed to emulate real wood decking, and weathers to a lighter shade in 30-60 days. The weathering process achieves a low-maintenance deck with a realistic look and lacks the high maintenance costs of traditional wood products. UltraDeck is backed by a 10 year limited warranty and really looks clean and sharp with the optional hidden fasteners that I used. All the work that is required is a good power-washing once or twice a year and you’re set to enjoy! No staining, sealing, or refinishing in any way is required.
